Pinot Grigio
Ecco Domani 2007 Pinot Grigio
The Grape
Grapes for our wine come from the Northeastern "Tre Venezie" region of Italy, where the Pinot Grigio grape has been cultivated for more than a century. The Pinot Grigio grape is genetically related to Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc, and is easily subject to color mutation. The skin color of the grapes can range from a bluish gray to a delicate pink, depending on the clone and the geographic zone. In fact, the word "Grigio" means gray in Italian, although the juice is drawn off the skins before the skins impart a tint to the wine.
Growing Region
The Tre Venezie is made up of three smaller growing regions: Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia. With a climate known for "cool nights and warm days," conditions in the Tre Venezie are conducive to exceptional grape maturation. Ecco Domani meticulously combines the inherent strengths of the fruit from each of these premier regions to create full-flavored wines with superb colors and wonderful aromas, backed by fine levels of intensity. 60% of the 2007 blend was sourced from Italy's most renowned Pinot Grigio growing region, Trentino Alto Adige with the balance being sourced from Friuli Venezia Giulia. These two regions within the Tre Venezie produced the best fruit for the 2007 vintage.
Viticultural Notes
The climate during the growing season was characterized by high daytime temperatures, which provided a positive maturation period that allowed for ideal growth of the grapes. Pinot Grigio was the first of the white varietals to be harvested. Harvest began in mid-August in the warmest areas of Trentino, and was completed in early September. The climate during harvest contributed to excellent sugar accumulation in the grapes, while a drop in temperature during the nights to 10°C promoted the development of aromatic substances.
Winemaker Notes
Our Pinot Grigio is crafted from 91% Pinot Grigio grapes and 9% Chardonnay from Trentino, harvested at optimal maturity levels. The wine was made "in bianco" or "in the white," referring to the vinification process that transforms the blue-gray colored berries into delicate white wine. A soft pressing was used to enhance flavor extraction while imparting minimal color from the skins. The juice was fermented in temperature-controlled tanks and a selection of specific yeast was added at a temperature of 20ºC. To intensify the tropical fruit characteristics of the wine, 4.5% of the blend (3% Pinot Grigio and 1.5% Chardonnay) is surmaturo grapes, which are grapes that are left on the vine longer than normal, allowing the juice to develop greater concentration and complexity from the extended hang time. After settling, the wine was cold stabilized, filtered and bottled under sterile conditions, avoiding malolactic fermentation and preserving the fruit characteristics of the wine.
Tasting Notes
This wine has a clear, straw yellow color, with light golden reflections. A low concentration of surmaturo grapes gives the wine tropical fruit notes that make this unique vintage truly exotic, with apple and pineapple aromas and flavors. The wine is full bodied, with a pleasantly soft palate and a long finish.
