Study NY - 2011
Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, Tara St. James is the head designer for Brooklyn, New York based Study. Formerly the creative director of eco-friendly sportswear collection, Covet, St. James launched the Study line in September 2009. The collection is inspired by restrictions, using hand-dyed ikat silks and examines no-waste patternmaking. Believing that open source material plays a strong role in the development of the sustainable design community, she started Study Hall in 2010 where her interns developed, produced and sold their own sustainable mini collections. She is also the fashion director for The Uniform Project, a fundraising platform using sustainable design to raise money for underprivileged children and serves as a mentor at the Awamaki Lab, a program that fosters cross-cultural partnerships between young designers and Peru's Awamaki indigenous weaver collective. St. James designs for a customer who wants unique timeless and ageless pieces that have been produced using sustainable methods in ethical factories. Study NY is a collection that stands out effortlessly with techniques that result in very architectural transformation of more traditional silhouettes.
