Subversive Jewelry - 2008
Pittsburgh native Justin Giunta, the designer behind Subversive Jewelry, studied at several art institutions, including Pratt Institute and the Gerrit Reitveld Academie in Amsterdam. After earning his BFA from Carnegie Mellon University, Giunta was awarded a fellowship at Yale University.
An artist who traverses many media-painting, fashion, interior design and industrial design-Giunta brings to Subversive Jewelry an inventive sensibility poised between fine art and commercial design. Borrowing the baroque philosophy of "more is more", Subversive Jewelry mixes hand-crafted techniques with the notion of modern deconstruction in fashion.
Giunta incorporates the intrinsic rarity of materials from flea-markets, thrift stores and highly sought collectibles to create a rich palette for his jewelry pieces. He approaches each unique design much like he would a new drawing. With a wide spectrum of clientele, Subversive Jewelry has carved a steadfast niche encompassing fine art, craftsmanship and commercial design.
Since his EDFF win, Giunta has been nominated for a Council of Fashion Designers of America Swarovski Award for Accessories Design, and has launched a limited collection at Target as part of the mass retailer's "Go International" program.
