Trovata - 2005
John Rutledge, Jeff Halmos, Josia Lamberto-Egan, and Sam Shipley comprise the design team behind Trovata, based in Newport Beach, California. The four founders have a collective resumé void of any fashion experience; in fact, their college studies focused on economics, finance, politics and painting. As students, they tossed their majors out the window and started making clothes.
In 2001, Trovata shipped its first collection-which appeared at Barneys New York, Fred Segal and American Rag-from a college dormitory. Fashion publication DNR named the brand a "Hot New Label" in 2002, and GQ selected Trovata as one of "today's best emerging designers." Vogue accurately described the young designers as "four surfers hanging ten in the fashion waters."
Following their Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation win, Trovata received a Council of Fashion Designers of America Swarovski Perry Ellis Award for Menswear in 2006, and the foursome designed a limited edition carryall for accessories icon Coach. Trovata opened its first free standing retail store in 2006 in Newport Beach, and announced plans for a retail location in Tokyo. Trovata also launched a suiting for men collection during the Fall/Winter 2008 season.
